Overview

Coffee Making Workshop

The first thing I do in the morning is make myself a cup of coffee. So do 1.5 billion other people every single day! You may be one of us. How much do you actually know about the origins and the making of your morning fuel?

For Greeks, coffee is a very important part of life. It's where Greeks relax, connect, make decisions and feel like they belong — over a cup of coffee. In this hour with Michalis, Mirka, and Eleftheria, you'll see why.

You'll explore the origins of coffee, from the green bean to your cup, and learn how coffee became a huge part of Greek modern life. You'll start with green, unroasted beans, barely recognisable as coffee. You'll follow the roasting, watch the colour shift and the workshop fill with the kind of smell that makes people stop talking for a second. The beans are then ground by hand and brewed slowly in a briki, buried in hot sand — the way it's been done in Greek homes for generations.

You'll finish with a Greek coffee, a glass of tsipouro, and loukoumi — the way it's done in the monasteries of Halkidiki to this day. We'll tell you more about that tradition in person; it's better spoken than written down. There's a little gift from us too. Before you leave, you'll take home a small bag of the same coffee to remember us and relive Greece at home.

Eleftheria · Founder & local host

I grew up in Afytos, the village people call the prettiest in Halkidiki. I studied the coastline here for my thesis, interviewed the people who care for it, and learned that visitors were quietly hungry for the real thing. Konxa is how I offer it to them.
